The physician workforce is getting younger. In fact, studies show that approximately one third of working physicians today are millennials. That means there are as many as four generations of physicians working side by side. It’s an exciting time to be entering the practice of medicine — there are an abundance of mentors, a medical industry hungry for new ideas, an influx of practice technologies and a transformative shift toward value-based care. Optum is preparing rising physicians to excel in this exciting new era of medicine with the Physician Pathways Program.
The future of medicine is going to look very different. It will bring together the best of clinical care, medical innovation and global data so our future physicians can do more than just practice medicine — they can be champions for a healthier world. With the Optum Physician Pathways Program, we can give rising physicians a head start. This program allows last-year residents and fellows to begin onboarding for an Optum career while they finish their training.
Highlights of the Optum Physician Pathways Program include:
- Expert mentorship: Mentorship from an experienced physician in our organization to support your transition from training to full-time employment at Optum to set you up for success.
- Financial support: Receive a stipend for the one to three hours per month you commit to our flexible program.
- Relationship building: Meet your leaders and peers months prior to starting.
- Enhance your final year of training: Stay focused on your training, commit to a full-time position early and learn about value-based care and population health.
The Optum Physician Pathways Program doesn’t just prepare rising clinicians for a fulfilling career at Optum; it prepares them to be leaders for the future of value-based medicine. As the industry moves away from the classic fee-for-service model and into more value-based care models, there will be increased need for well-trained, supported and equipped clinicians to help patients achieve their overall health goals and live healthier lives.
